The difference between a working photographer and a hobbyist is, let’s face it, a working photographer gets paid. A working photographer not only knows his craft but also knows his value and charges his customers accordingly.

This weekend I had the opportunity to work two events that were not paying jobs. And they were some of the best days I had as a photographer.
On Friday, I shot photos of the Cicero-North Syracuse High School Senior Ball, which was held at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown, formerly known as the Hotel Syracuse. The gorgeous ballroom was packed with students who were excited to get dressed up, dance with their friends, and celebrate the end of their high school days. Lots of smiling faces, something that a photographer loves to capture.
On Saturday, I took photos at Paige’s Butterfly Run in downtown Syracuse. This organization is dedicated to the fight against cancer and blood disorders in children. Again, lots and lots of smiling faces. The energy was so upbeat. Everyone seemed so excited to be there, to contribute, to support, to celebrate. I’ve got to thank my friend Dan Del Fuoco for introducing me to the man who coordinated the photography that day, Pat Duffy. Dan and Pat are fine photographers themselves, and it felt good to be part of a team that captured all the magic of the event.
What a weekend. And although I didn’t earn a cent from either of these jobs, I definitely got “paid.”
